Breathe Architects (Martin Leifhebber & Associates), Toronto
Breathe Architects
Our unique approach sets Building Code precedents and enables our clients to express themselves through our product: be it intellectually, spiritually or monetarily. Their enthusiasm, evident on their websites creates clientele for us on a ongoing basis, so sustainability is achieved all around.
We see, as a logical extension, the need to promote more environmental sensitive living on a larger scale. Up until a few years ago the practice has been a Sole Proprietor. By embracing the Integrated Design Process we have further expanded the team and skill set necessary in our manifestation of an ecological practice. This inspires our clients to be more open-minded, accept ecological principles into their lives, and to communicate these to the broader community.
Implementation: As a team - client, builder and architect - we challenge conventions by proving that alternatives are ready for implementation. A good example is ruling of the Ontario Building Code Commission that strawbale constructions, a ’breathing’ wall assembly, is superior to conventional ‘sealed’ construction.
Our practice is a think tank that allows our clients and ourselves to decompress and question what we have deemed an acceptable and comfortable ‘way of life’.
BUILDING AS PROCESS RATHER THAN PRODUCT
Clients that hire us are able to reinvent themselves, as their research and our design insight combine to provide answers that result in buildings that are used as instruments of change: Our model inspires and enables clients to promote more environmentally sensitive living by initiating ecological entrepreneurism. Because of the effectiveness of this model we see our clients as a logical extension of our work. Our innovative practices speak for themselves as our clients go on to demonstrate the worthiness of our innovative ideas, communicate this on their websites, and in doing this, solicit additional pros.
Purpose and Goals:
We anticipate the visions of our residential clients to become more and more relevant to commercial and institutional organizations. The practice’s transformation from Martin Liefhebber Architect Inc. into Breathe Architects enables us to respond to larger scale building programs. Our projects provide evidence of effective alternatives, reinforce clients ambitions, and create a sustainable business model – for our clients, ourselves and the ongoing relevance of architecture.
BSN Architects, Toronto
Baird Sampson Neuert Architects website
BSN is committed to maximizing the environmental quality and performance of all of its projects. The firm believes strongly in the ethical dimension of “sustainability” which promotes the principal of equitable access to the earth’s resources across space and through time. Our design process focuses on the conceptualization and execution of exceptional interior and exterior environments: that are healthy for their users; that promote long term sustainability of the project; and that reduce negative effects on the larger natural environment to the absolute minimum achievable.
The firm is an acknowledged leader of “green design” in Canada. It is experienced with the Canadian Green Building Council’s (CGBC) Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, the federal government’s Building Incentives Programme (CBIP) for energy efficient design and other programmes and precedents related to issues of sustainability. Two of the firm’s principals, Barry Sampson and Jon Neuert, are LEED accredited professionals, as are senior associate Yves Bonnardeaux, and associates Ian Douglas and Mauro Carreño.
We approach the design of each project and its site as an integrated “system of systems”. The firm’s interest in “green design” has developed out of its research and practical experience with the application of principals of “bioclimatic design” to public spaces and public conservatories. Both require building and landscape systems and components to be integrated in the design process so that they can work together as “environmental modifiers”, achieving effective responsiveness to climate and maximizing usability under changeable weather conditions. This approach entails creative collaboration with other specialist professionals and the breaking down of disciplinary boundaries to eliminate system redundancy.
Our expertise with environmental design has developed out of successful project experience.

gh3 Inc
gh3 Inc Architects
gh3 designs in the increasingly complex realm where architecture, urbanism + landscape overlap. We design with a modernist's eye to order, beauty and social possibility, and an environmentalist's awareness about sustainability and long-term thinking.
Informed by the past and speaking to the future, we design with a modernist’s eye to order, beauty and social possibility, and an environmentalist’s awareness about sustainability and long–term planning.
We apply global learning to local problems through a staff that brings specialized expertise in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. Our thinking is grounded in knowledge, and our design in creative excellence. We bring learning from two decades of collaboration to projects that blur the edge between buildings and the out–of–doors.
Our work is visually engaging, with the underlying philosophy that the best way of encouraging sustainable thinking is to bond people to their environments through deep understanding, and by making good design an indispensable part of everyday life. To create instructive, engaging, environments, we approach every design with a site and context-specific approach. The result is inspiring and useful spaces that are fundamentally modern in outlook.gh3 works closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the values and aspirations of every project are reflected in the design. We bring our cross–disciplinary insights into the cultural, social and physical context of each design. At heart, we are very practical designers, combining our professional training and life experiences to our work. We design with the intention that our projects will last for centuries, and the pragmatic awareness of the importance of ease of maintenance, durable details, and good value for investment.
Pat Hanson and Diana Gerrard, each with over 30 years of experience in their respective careers, own the Toronto-based practice. Individually, they have designed and run major projects throughout North America. Together, in 2005, they founded gh3 and have quickly established themselves as a major design practice. Working globally, in both the public and private sectors, and in all fields – educational, institutional, commercial and leisure – gh3 has completed award-winning projects at many different scales that have been extensively published internationally.
gh3’s work is realized by a studio that also includes architects, landscape architects, intern architects and support staff. The firm has steadily grown in capacity since its inception, winning multiple awards from their peers. The ability of the 2 senior partners to mentor and direct the work of a young, enthusiastic and deeply talented staff has been key to our accomplishments and success in international competitions, including the most recent winning for June Callwood Park and the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture 2010 for A Photographer’s Studio Over A Boathouse.

Building/Environments must be designed with love and care. An artifact designed in this way is substantially different, superior, its inner life is revealed; it does not seem inanimate. It has the sense of a living thing, and a sense of 'soul'.
For every project we seek a 'conceptual DNA molecule' – a central idea which imparts information to every aspect of the design, ensuring harmony, unity, and authenticity; as in an oak tree – the roots, trunk, branches and leaves are all harmonized and unified by its DNA. The central idea comes from asking, predesign, how one should begin to think about the project. Every project deserves a 'tabula rasa' – a blank slate.
There are many ways to categorize spaces, but for us the most useful categorization is as 'connector space' and 'non-connector space.' For us the space (or spaces) which connect the programmatic elements is as important as the elements themselves. One methodology we have developed uses the analogy of the ‘Architectural Bouquet in a Vase’, where the vase is the ‘connector space’ and the flowers are the elements: the vase is custom-designed to control the flow and organization of the building.
Kirkor Architects, Toronto
Kirkor Architect website
Kirkor Architects + Planners was founded in 1990 by partners Steven Kirshenblatt and Clifford Korman. It has developed into a firm of nearly 60 architects, interns and technologists who support a robust client list including major developers both local and international. Kirkor’s focus is on the creation of responsible, sustainable, economically viable developments through smart growth strategies. We have expertise in urban design principles of intensification, mixed-use development and public transportation that are necessary to ensure holistic, healthy building practices. Urban intensification is a critical issue for cities that must cope with rising populations while curbing sprawl. Kirkor is an authority in urban densification with award-winning smart build projects across North America.
Kirkor’s clearest directive is to create buildable architecture. Our partnership knows where to start a building design, how to manage the budget effectively, negotiate with municipalities and planning authorities, and execute a well ordered project through technical drawings and focused on-site discourse. Our application of this fundamental philosophy to every project, without exception, is one of Kirkor’s greatest strengths.
KPMB Architects, Toronto
KPMB Architects
The integration of architecture and sustainability, performance and aesthetics and making buildings that support the public realm is at the heart of KPMB’s work. The individual act of making a building must be both transformative and enduring, and take part in a collective effort to support all levels of life, work, and creativity. Architecture must be positioned responsively between landscape and urbanism, issues of cost and environmental performance, and innovation and design excellence. This approach to architecture has earned the practice the Royal Architectural Institute of Architects Firm of the Year Award and the Toronto Arts Award.

A successful project is the product of a close working relationship between Architect and Client. An Architect must have a "good ear", not just a "good eye". We listen carefully to our clients and respect their programs and their budgets.
Each project is developed and produced as a team effort with full involvement throughout the course of the project by the firm's principal. We make ourselves available to our clients and their staff and encourage their participation and review not only in the design process but throughout all phases of the work:
- schematic design
- design development
- budget preparation
- contract document preparation
- tender call
- project construction
- project follow-up
Client involvement ensures that all needs are addressed in detail in order that day to day operations in the completed building run smoothly.
David Mailing Architects Associates, Ottawa
>David Mailing, award-winning architect
Our approach to our work is quite simple: the project belongs to the client, not to us. We are just part of the overall team required to see the project through to fruition. We have a passion for good design, which we apply at all levels of the work, always respectful of the client's needs, budget and schedule. We insist on earning the trust of our clients, which can only be attained by listening, working as a team player, and always providing a consistent level of quality service.
Fine residential homes, luxury cottages, commercial / retail developments.
McCormack Architects – Community-driven design
McCormack Architecture website
McCormack Architects is a design architecture firm that understands the user experience. How people ‘use’ a building and what they expect from it are central to the design process.
How should a building make you feel? What qualities do you admire in other buildings? How should your building stay the same/how should it change over time?
Whether it’s for you, your family, your community, your business, association or membership. McCormack loves designing homes, work spaces and recreational facilities that people use. The design team is oriented towards contemporary modern work with all of the incumbent design and ecological advantages. That being said, our acclaimed work in heritage conditions and traditional materials takes advantage of a ‘best of both worlds’ approach.
The collaborative advantage in McCormack l DesignArc is the idea that the “Graduate School of Design approach” can come to terms with ‘down-to-earth expectations’. With this foundation and thinking we provide the leadership and discipline to guide clients into the process of discovering what is possible through better design advice and accountable execution. From private residential projects, to corporate design programs, to public and institutional work, collaboration is the counterpoint to compromise. It's the way we resolve every challenge and it is the way that makes the project the best it can be.
The atelier structure of the firm provides the opportunities for design team members to be immersed in all levels of detail design including millwork, furniture, lighting, landscape and dynamic structures. Now in its 10th year, McCormack Architects has lead projects from $10,000 to $10 million and designed everything from massive retractable roof installations to a kitchen sink.
Increasingly our design team is able to advance a sustainable architecture agenda with our clients, and to collaborate with other designers, fabricators and artisans. We know what is required, but we also know what makes people happy.

Cynthia Zahoruk Architecture website
Design becomes a process of integrating some key ingredients… program and environment and finding a unique solution. On all of our projects we listen to our clients needs, then together with our clients, create a design that is distinctive and fits their goals.
Our full service approach to architecture gives our clients added assurance that we will handle any size project both confidently and completely. We not only strive to be a full service architectural firm, but excel in project development, zoning and approval processing and building permit expediting, and this provides relief from the time consuming development issues that can overwhelm the client with a full work load.
