Architect Zaha Hadid named 37th most powerful Arab woman

Congratulations to brilliant, visionary Iraqi / UK architect Zaha Hadid for being named by Arabian Business magazine as the 37th Most Powerful Woman in the Arab world! Her work is exemplary and emblematic of the very best of Twenty-first Century architecture.

Despite winning many international competitions, a number of Zaha Hadid’s winning designs were initially never built: notably, The Peak Club in Hong Kong (1983) and the Cardiff Bay Opera House in Wales (1994).

In 2002, the Iraqi Hadid won the international design competition to design Singapore’s one-north master plan. In 2004, Hadid became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. She is a member of the editorial board of the Encyclopedia Britannica. In 2005, her design won the competition for the new city casino of Basel, Switzerland.

In 2006, Hadid was honoured with a retrospective spanning her entire work at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The same year she also received an Honorary Degree from the American University of Beirut.

Zaha Hadid info from wikipedia:

Hadid was born in 1950 in Baghdad, Iraq. She received a degree in mathematics from the American University of Beirut before moving to study at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

After graduating she worked with her former teachers, Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, becoming a partner in 1977. It was with Koolhaas that she met the engineer Peter Rice who gave her support and encouragement early on, at a time when her work seemed difficult to build.

In 1980 she established her own London-based practice. During the 1980s she also taught at the Architectural Association. She has also taught at prestigious institutions around the world; she held the Kenzo Tange Chair at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, the Sullivan Chair at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture, guest professorships at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, the Knowlton School of Architecture, at The Ohio State University, the Masters Studio at Columbia University, New York and the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut.

In addition, she was made Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. She has been on the Board of Trustees of The Architecture Foundation. She is currently Professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in Austria.

A winner of many international competitions, theoretically influential and groundbreaking, a number of Hadid's winning designs were initially never built: notably, The Peak Club in Hong Kong (1983) and the Cardiff Bay Opera House in Wales (1994). In 2002 Hadid won the international design competition to design Singapore's one-north masterplan. In 2005, her design won the competition for the new city casino of Basel, Switzerland. In 2004 Hadid became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture's equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Previously, she had been awarded a CBE for services to architecture. She is a member of the editorial board of the Encyclopædia Britannica. In 2006, Hadid was honored with a retrospective spanning her entire work at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In that year she also received an Honorary Degree from the American University of Beirut.

Zaha Hadid's architectural design firm - Zaha Hadid Architects - is over 350 people strong, headquartered in a Victorian former school building in Clerkenwell, London.

In 2008, she ranked 69th on the Forbes list of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women". On 2 January 2009, she was the guest editor of the BBC's flagship morning radio news programme, Today.

In 2010 she was named by Time magazine as influential thinker in the 2010 TIME 100 issue. In September 2010, The British magazine New Statesman listed Zaha Hadid at number 42 in their annual survey of "The World's 50 Most Influential Figures 2010".

She won the 2010 Stirling Prize for one of her most celebrated work, the Maxxi in Rome.

Hadid is the designer of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park in Seoul, South Korea, which is expected to be the centerpiece of the festivities for the city's designation as World Design Capital 2010. The complex is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Non-architectural work

She has also undertaken some high-profile interior work, including the Mind Zone and Feet zone at the Millennium Dome in London and the Z.CAR hydrogen-powered, three-wheeled automobile. In 2009, she worked with the clothing brand Lacoste, to create a new, high fashion, and advanced boot. In the same year, she also collaborated with the brassware manufacturer Triflow Concepts to produce two new designs in her signature parametric architectural style. Her unique contributions to brassware design and other fields continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
In 2007, Zaha Hadid designed the Moon System Sofa for leading Italian furniture manufacturer B&B Italia.

Zaha Hadid Architects, 2011

Zaha Hadid, founding partner of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and innovative projects builds on over thirty years of revolutionary experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design.

Working with senior office partner Patrik Schumacher, Hadid’s interest is in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as the practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems that lead to experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. Such a process often results in unexpected and dynamic architectural forms.

The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome, BMW Central Building in Leipzig and Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg are excellent demonstrations of the practice’s quest for complex, dynamic space. Previous seminal buildings, such as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati and Hoenheim-Nord Terminus in Strasbourg have also been hailed as architecture that transforms our vision of the future with new spatial concepts and bold, visionary forms.

Currently, the practice is working on a multitude of projects including; the Fiera di Milano master-plan and tower, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games, High-Speed Train Stations in Naples and Durango, the CMA CGM Head Office tower in Marseille and urban master-plans in Beijing, Bilbao, Istanbul, Singapore and the Middle East.

Zaha Hadid Architects continues to be a global leader in pioneering research and design investigation. Collaborations with artists, designers, engineers and clients that lead their industries have advanced the practice’s diversity and knowledge, whilst the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies have aided the realization of fluid, dynamic and therefore complex architectural structures.

Zaha Hadid’s work was the subject of a critically-acclaimed retrospective exhibition at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2006 and showcased at London’s Design Museum in 2007. Hadid’s recently completed projects include the Nordpark Railway stations in Innsbruck, Mobile Art for Chanel in Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York, the Zaragoza Bridge Pavilion in Spain and the Burnham Pavilion in Chicago.

Ushida Findlay Architects – Modern Curvilinear Buildings

Preston Park Houses - Innovative green project

Kathryn Findlay - Architectural Background

Her practice Ushida Findlay (Kathryn Findlay, 1953 & Eisaku Ushida, 1954) was the originator of the now in vogue curvilinear architecture, with her first major building the Truss Wall House in 1993 in Japan.

Raised on a farm in Angus, Findlay went onto study at the AA School of Architecture in London and graduated in 1979.

Her practice Ushida Findlay was the originator of the now in vogue curvilinear architecture, with her first major building the Truss Wall House in 1993 in Japan. In 2001, Findlay made her name with a starfish-plan design for a country house in England - Grafton New Hall. Ushida Findlay gained this project by winning the Royal Institute of British Architects’ competition in 2001 for a proposed English country house. Findlay is passionate about site expression. Her current focus is the modernity of traditional materials and building techniques. Dubbed ‘future-rustic’, her Poolhouse 2 is described by the critics as ‘disproportionately significant’.

Kathryn Findlay became an honorary architecture professor at Dundee University in 1999. Findlay received an architecture scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education for postgraduate research at Tokyo University. In 2005, she was awarded the Chair of Architecture and Environment at the University of Dundee.

Findlay is currently completing projects in Doha: a Museum and two grand houses, one for Qatar's Minister of Culture, The Beach Palace is now complete.

Recently, Ushida Findlay Architects have been commissioned to undertake a Feasibility Master plan for the York Art Gallery. An extraordinary carved timber arched roof space over the main gallery, designed by Edward Taylor in 1870, had been sealed off since the 1950s. Following its rediscovery, Ushida Findlay have been appointed to reveal this incredible space to the public.

Eduardo Souto de Moura; European architect extraordinaire

Cinema House in Porto, Portugal, designed by Portugese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura

Souto de Moura a key contributor to Porto School of Architecture

Eduardo Elísio Machado Souto de Moura (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɨˈðwaɾðu ˈsowtu dɨ ˈmowɾɐ]; born July 25, 1952) is a Portuguese architect. Son of medical doctor José Alberto Souto de Moura and wife Maria Teresa Ramos Machado, he is the brother of José Souto de Moura, former 9th Attorney-General of Portugal. Along with Fernando Távora and Álvaro Siza, he is one of the references of the Porto School of Architecture, where he was appointed Professor. Souto de Moura was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2011.

Although I haven't seen it written anywhere, Eduardo's architectural work looks influenced by the 20th Century visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and possibly also by Italian genius architect Mario Botta.

Souto de Moura was born in Porto, and studied sculpture before switching to architecture at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, the current FAUP - Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, and receiving his degree in 1980. From 1974 to 1979 he worked with Álvaro Siza Vieira at his architectural practice, who encouraged him to start his own firm. He began his career as an independent architect in 1980, after winning a design competition for the Casa das Artes, a culture center with an auditorium and an exhibition gallery in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion, in his native city of Porto. However, Souto de Moura collaborated with Siza on the Portuguese pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany, and Serpentine Gallery's annual summer pavilion in 2004.

Souto de Moura's early commissions were often modest residential houses, mainly in his native country. Later, he was commissioned with shopping centers, schools, art galleries, and a cinema, in countries including Spain, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Between 1989 and 1997, Souto de Moura spent eight years on the restoration Santa Maria do Bouro, a half-destroyed 12th-century monastery in Amares, transforming it into a Pousada.

From 1981 to 1990, Souto de Moura was assistant professor at his alma mater, and was later appointed Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto. He has been visiting professor at the architectural schools of Geneva, Paris-Belleville, Harvard University, Dublin, ETH Zurich and Lausanne, and has participated in numerous seminars and given many lectures both in Portugal and abroad. His work has appeared in various publications and exhibitions.

Estádio Municipal de Braga

On March 28, 2011, it was announced that Moura is the 2011 Pritzker Prize winner, architecture's highest honor. He is the second Portuguese architect to win the honor, after Álvaro Siza. The prize was supposed to be presented in April in Washington DC but the winner was prematurely leaked by a Spanish news organisation. The prize was awarded for his work including Estádio Municipal de Braga, the Burgo Tower in Porto and the Paula Rego Museum in Cascais.

He has been awarded the following prizes: the Pritzker Prize; the António de Almeida Foundation prize; the Antero de Quental Foundation prize; first prize in the Competition for the Restoration of Giraldo Square in Évora, Portugal; first prize in the Competition for the CIAC Pavilions; first prize in the Competition for a Hotel in Salzburg, Austria; first prize in the "IN/ARCH 1990 for Sicily" Competition; the Secil Prize for Architecture; second prize in the "Architecture and Stone" ideas competition; honourable mention for his Miramar House in the Secil Architectural Prizes; honourable mention for both the SEC Cultural Centre and the Alcanena House in the National Architectural Prizes.
