Dalian International Conference Center, China; Renderings to Construction

Much of the world's most innovative and daring architecture is in Asia, and the new Dalian International Conference Center in China is more proof in the pudding. Designed by Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, the building is gorgeous and points the way for functional yet elegant urban design.

Here is a pictorial taking you from architectural renderings through the beginnings of construction / foundation, up to where it is today, nearing completion.

One building the Dalian Center reminds me of is the Solar Stadium in Taiwan (designed by architects Toyo Ito of Japan). Take a look:

Top 5 Architectural Rendering companies worldwide

Best Architecture Visualization Service

For the past month or so I have been researching the best architectural rendering companies in the world, and have now edited down to a list of the Top 5 Architectural Visualization companies worldwide, plus a few Honourable Mentions. I understand that this is an entirely subjective affair, and the companies I have chosen are those that can make buildings, properties and interior rooms "sparkle and shine."

I hope to expand this post a bit next week, explaining what to me seem to be the strengths of each of these architectural visualization companies. Readers are invited to post alternative lists or additional suggestions in the Comments section below; we'll expand the Honourable Mentions list soon and hopefully have a Top Ten or Top Twenty list available by summer.

As I work as Director of Sales at DO HERE Digital, it would be unfair to rank the companies on this list, so I have presented them alphabetically. Here is the list of the 5 highest quality companies producing dramatic, elegant architectural renderings that can be used for zoning, permitting, marketing and sales:

Biomorphic buildings embrace our future

David Butterworth, Associate Partner, Kirkor Architects

According to Dictionary.com:

Biomorph
(noun):

a painted, drawn, or sculptured free form or design suggestive in shape of a living organism, esp. an ameba or protozoan: The paintings of Joan MirĂł are often notable for their playful, bright-colored biomorphs.

Related forms:

bi·o·mor·phic, adjective
bi·o·mor·phism, noun

Origin:

1890–95; bio- + -morph

The Senior Conceptual Designer at Kirkor Architects, David Butterworth, has created (together with Samuel Zeng of DO HERE Architectural Renderings) a vision of biomorphic buildings on the Toronto waterfront for the 2009 Portlands Competition (descriptive text by David):

We only see fragments of the past and brave gestures of the future in the densification of urban cores. Each gesticulation becomes an expression – a murmur on the reality of what could be achieved.

True freedom of expression allows complete indulgence concerning the interplay of form and structure. Allowing buildings to set their footprint in avenues of un-built mass provides for urban renewal in areas of cities previously left as urban wasteland from decaying manufacturing.

The iconic landmark transforms itself over time and becomes an emblem of a generation. The sense of ownership of this emblem comes not only from its footprint in the city but the iconic nature of its ability to be recognized.

David promises more gorgeous, flowing buildings in 2011, so stay tuned!!!
